Un concert de Dhrupad commence par l'Alap, qui représente le développement lent et élaboré d'un Raga (mode) utilisant des modèles mélodiques coulant librement. L'élaboration de l'Alap se fait sur les syllables d'un mantra 'Om antaran tvam, taran taaran tam, ananta Hari Narayan Om' , qui signifie 'Seigneur, conduis-moi de l'obscurité vers la lumière'. Les phrases d'Alap sont très lentes et contemplatives au début, mais le tempo augmente progressivement, et dans les passages rapides des ornements vigoureux et gais prennent le dessus. L'Alap présente toute une variété d'émotions humaines: sérénité, compassion, sensualité, pathos, étrangeté, colère et héroisme.

Le Dhrupad représente la plus ancienne tradition musicale classique survivant en Inde. Il a pris ses racines dans la déclamation des hymnes védiques, et s'est graduellement développé pour devenir une forme artistique indépendante, possédant sa grammaire complexe propre. Chanté à l'origine dans les temples, il a pris son essor sous les rois moghols et rajpoutes.
Ce style de chant nécessite la pratique du Nada Yoga, par lequel, grâce à plusieurs pratiques yogiques, le chanteur augmente la résonance interne de son corps, et parvient à faire résonner le son en le dirigeant librement dans la zone du nombril à la tête. Ceci lui permet d'utiliser toute une palette de tonalités subtiles et de microtons.

L'Alap est suivi par une composition agrémentée d'improvisations rythmiques, et accompagnée par un tambour nommé Pakhawaj (l'ancêtre du Tabla). Dans cette musique les notes ne sont pas traitées comme des points fixes, mais comme des entités fluides possédant d'infinies couleurs microtonales. La musique est profondément spirituelle et méditative, une forme d'adoration.
