Bharat Vyas had learnt dhrupad and vina from several teachers including singers of the now-extinct Kalpi tradition. The Kalpi tradition of dhrupad is reported by him to have preserved many old compositions with great accuracy and Vyas was probably one of the last singers who knew compositions of the tradition. He also mentions the famed dhrupad singer of Jaipur Karamat Khan and Ziauddin Khan among his many teachers.

Vyas taught at the Baroda Music College and is known for his book Dhrupad Sameeksha. The Sangeet Natak Akademi Delhi has a few recordings of Bharat Vyas singing alap and compositions.
