Aghor Chakravarty Dhrupad Singer

Aghor Chakravarty

Aghor Chakravarty lived in Sonarpur near Calcutta and learnt from Ali Baksh Khan the resident singer of Wajid Ali Shah's court in exile in Metiabruz. He was renowned for his loud resonant voice and his layakari and bol bant - rhythmical variations of compositions with pakhavaj accompaniment. The earliest record of the dhrupad dhamar genre is probably his record of a dhamar from 1902.

For more on Aghor Chakravarty and other musicians of his time with rare photographs see book Dhrupad of the Dagars, Conceptual Foundations and Contemporary Questions
