Dhrupad Kendra, Bhopal- an institution for training dhrupad vocalists invites applications for scholarships for its 4 year program scheduled to start in August 2011.
Any citizen of India (and also NRI, PIO, OCI) aged between 14 and 30 years having passed High School (class 10 level) can apply to study at the Dhrupad Kendra. The applicant should have some basic knowledge of Indian Classical Music. The training program will start in August 2011 and will be fully residential with the students compulsorily required to live at the Kendra. Each student in the scholarship category will receive a monthly scholarship of Rs 2000/- for a period of four years .There will be periodic reviews of progress by expert committes. The last date for applying is 28th July 2011. The program will commence mid August 2011. The program is very rigorous and demanding and only highly motivated students who wish to learn in the traditional Guru- Shishya system and fully dedicate themselves to Dhrupad should apply. Some seats of the Kendra are reserved for residents of Madhya Pradesh while others are open to all citizens of India who satisfy the criteria for eligibility. Under exceptional circumstances students who do not meet the age, residence, citizenship and other criteria are admtted in the non-scholarship or in rare cases in the scholarship category at the sole discretion of the admissions committee. Renowned film director Shri Mani Kaul, Shri Ashok Vajpeyi the then Secretary of Culture of the M.P. govt. and Rudra Veena exponent Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar played a key role in the formation of the Kendra. Subsequently from 2008 till 2010 for a period of about two years the position was held by renowned Dagbhanga Gharana Dhrupadiya Pandit Abhay Narayan Mallik. At present the Director and Guru of the Dhrupad Kendra is intenationally renowned Dagar Vani exponent Ashish Sankrityayan. During the tenure of Ustad Z. F. Dagar the Dhrupad Kendra produced many outstanding practitioners of Dhrupad and became a resounding affirmation of the merits of the traditional Indian Guru Shishya system of learning for the propagation of traditional oral knowledge.
