Pakhawaj Workshop The pakhawaj is a rare instrument today, with very few practitioners and few opportunities to perform, for those who still keep it alive, since as an instrument of accompaniment the pakhawaj is tied to the Dhrupad and Been traditions which themselves have very few exponents left. It is crucial that the pakhawaj be popularized and its practitioners be given more opportunities to teach and to perform. Anjali Arts has organized a one day free pakhawaj workshop for intermediate and advanced students at Kathak Kendra New Delhi on 27th August, by renowned pakhawaj exponent Pandit Dalchand Sharma. In this workshop students of the pakhawaj will get an opportunity to hone their skills and receive advanced training. The workshop will cover various areas like sound production, layakari, yati and jati and the creation of rasa through tala and laya and traditional parans (compositions). It is hoped that the workshop will inspire young, aspiring pakhawaj players and will also give discerning listeners an opportunity to learn more about this majestic instrument and the mysteries of tala and laya. Pandit Dalchand Sharma, one of the finest pakhawaj exponents of India, received training in the guru shishya parampara from Pandit Totaram Shama, Pandit Murlidhar Sharma and Pandit Purshottamdas. He has performed in prestigious music concerts all over India and abroad, is a top grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan, and a staff artist of the Faculty of Music and Fine Arts, Delhi University.
